Blurry Identities
Luso-Mexican movement research
João is Portuguese, Julia is Mexican and both have met in The Netherlands. Since 2014 they have developed their interest in finding the place of tradition within our globalized society, a project they named “Blurry Identities”. Researching and deconstructing traditions –its structure, historical context and its “uses” nowadays– resulted in five duets: Diluting (2014), Collaging (2015), Unfurling (2016), Unifying (archives) (2017-2018), Burning (archives) (2018). Their collaboration is seen on stage, as they both perform, and behind the scenes, as they co-direct and co-choreograph.

The creation of the five traditional globalized dances. Some dutch dances were learned by text (Riepe Riepe Garst, Baonopstekker, Slaapmuts, Olde Step, and Ijswals) and used as canvas to collage a glossary of traditional dances movements learned though tutorials in YouTube from Canada (Inuit), D. R. Congo, Iceland, Israel, Hungary, Mongolia, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Porto Rico, Russia and Zimbabwe. If we think Culture as the glue that keep us together, what are we glued to nowadays?
